Sydney is that sort of in your face city. Glinting bluer than blue water from Bondi to the city, the harbor bridge, the opera house. All iconic and immediately identify the city as Sydney. Fabulous apartments with amazing views whether they look out over the ocean or through the city across to the bridge and opera house. Alex Burridge (wine editor) lived in Sydney until recently and deeply investigated some of the city’s finest and quirkiest establishments and on this basis with some old favourites of our own we have compiled a recommendation list. These are establishments that we have all eaten at and can recommend without hesitation.
We have specifically linked (where possible) restaurants directly to their home page so that you don’t have to wade through endless and mainly useless information to find what you really want to know, like how to make a booking. LOL!!!.

A very special thanks to contributors who dine at their own cost and continue to supply reliable, educated information for Galaxy Guides. AO

Probably Australia’s best Italian once you’ve eaten the food of Armando Percuoco you will understand why. His signature tagliatelli with truffled egg is unforgettable. Understated perfectly cooked and fab wine list. Sure chef owner Armondo Percuoco is a rather a grumpy old bastard (possibly not unlike myself) and his mood on the night can affect the experience, however generations have passed through this restaurant that gives no quarter to modernity or fashion and left devotees for life. Most recently our friend Jodie Evans who shared a meal with me there almost 15 years ago… and who noted “Olive it was sublime and the memory of the truffle egg and pasta was met in every aspect!” This is a restaurant that rarely receives the accolades it deserves from the modern press, a point on which we disagree completely. Excellent wine list, great service and even better food.

This restaurant is highly recommended by the Galaxy Guides team. AO

Vulcans Café sad to report is now closed — revised October 2013

Philip Searle and Barry Ross have been icons of the Australian restaurant scene for almost 40 years. Searle is a genius when it comes to cooking and his food has taken the full circle from outrageous and inquisitive to audacious to the sublimely confident restrained food he cooks today. Searle has been the inspiration for Australian chefs for at least 25 years and his obsession with produce and technique made this Australia’s most memorable regional dining experience. All we can hope is that they reopen again…and soon!
